I was elected to the House of
Commons for the constituency of Halifax on the 5th May
2005. I was, from 1995 until March 2006, a Labour Councillor for
the Ovenden Ward.
Before being elected as an
MP, I was secretary to Alice Mahon MP, my predecessor. Soon after
being elected, I joined the Campaign Group and am now a member of
the Environmental Audit Committee, The Procedure
Committee and The Justice Committee. I am also Chair
of the Working Group on Sleep Disorders and a member of BRAKE- the
road safety group.
I normally spend Thursday and
Fridays working in Halifax where I have four members of
staff: Michael, Jago, Martin and Gary, who deal with
casework, my Halifax diary, lobbying issues, organisations and
media coverage. I also hold regular surgeries and weekly visits to
schools, hospitals, GPs, factories and volunteer groups. I work
closely with the Co-op Party, local Labour councillors and
The Labour Group.
I tend to spend Monday to Wednesday in
Parliament. My office is based in the Palace of Westminster and I
have one member of staff, Meryl, who deals with a number of
key Parliamentary issues, such as lobbying issues, my Westminster
Diary, meeting key organisations and businesses and various policy
research.
